Legend of the Guardians – Sabong up in the Air

When I first saw the movie’s billboard, it gave me the impression that it is a cutie fairy tale movie just for kids. I always consider owls as creepy creatures. The ones in the billboard looked cute so never did I imagine that it is something that would feature fighting scenes among birds brutally killing each other. If you love sabong (cockfighting), you will love this movie.

Legend of the guardians is a tale of two young brother owls who have chosen two different paths. Soren chose the path of honour, while Kludd chose the path of the strong. They were both kidnapped by the Pure Ones, whom they found out were developing a new kind of weapon to defeat their old enemies, the Guardians. With the help of a new friend, Soren escaped and started a quest to seek the Guardians across the sea, meeting new friends along the way. It was a quest that would finally lead him to himself taking the Guardians’ ancient oath.

When I saw the fight scenes, it felt like I was watching “sabong”, royal rumble style, only that the fights were all up in the air. Instead of tari (cockfighting knives), the fighters have their metal helmets, talons, and swords for some birds. All the fights were so artistically crafted it looked as if the birds had their own version of martial arts. If you have watched the movie “300”, the fight scenes would seem comparable. At the end of the movie, I found out how they came up with such beautiful fight scenes: the director was Zack Snyder.

Having also seen “Happy Feet”, I could not help but compare Soren’s face and facial expressions to those of Mumble’s.

Though the movie is fictional, it features some interesting facts about owls. The following might also help you appreciate the movie more:

  1. Young owls are called owlets.
  2. Owlets practice flying by branching – short glides from branch to branch with few flops of their wings.
  3. Owls have the ability to fly silently allowing them to get close to their prey unnoticed.
  4. Owls excrete undigested food such as the furs and bones of a rat by vomiting them out as pellets.
  5. With the exception of the burrowing owl, the worst place for an owl is the ground (according to Kludd). It makes sense because this is where they are mostly vulnerable to attacks from other animals.
  6. Crows are faster; owls are stronger.
  7. Bats don’t have gizzards.
  8. The elf owl is the smallest of all owl species.
  9. Most owl species are nocturnal. They sleep during the day, thus, the pun “daymares” when they have bad dreams.
  10. This one is not related to the movie: The biggest threats to owls nowadays are human beings.

Enjoy!!! Assemble the talons!!! :)
